artificial suburbanism →
citymaus: In early 1942, Japanese submarines began to surface around the California coast as WWII expanded to US boarders. A rightfully nervous government set to protect their most valuable coastal assets, including Lockheed Manufacturing, a major producer of military planes and equipment. Located in Burbank, it was extremely vulnerable to potential attacks and needed to be safeguarded; but...

RUSSIA: A BILL TO SILENCE MILLIONS →
lawsonry: thefuror: Political leaders in St. Petersburg are about to vote on law that will make it illegal for any person to write a book, publish an article or speak in public about being gay, lesbian or transgender. The ruling party led by President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin could make millions of people invisible with the stroke of a pen.  Human rights defenders around the country...

aprettywar: “Emotions, in my experience, aren’t covered by single words. I don’t believe in ‘sadness,’ or ‘joy,’ or ‘regret.’ Maybe the best proof that language is patriarchal is that it oversimplifies feeling. I’d like to have at my disposal complicated hybrid emotions, Germanic train-car constructions like, say, ‘the happiness that attends disaster.’ Or: ‘the disappointment of sleeping with...

alacritr: looks kind of funky because i’ve got the full 360 degree range of yaw and roll angles mapped to the ~180 degree ranges of the pan and tilt servos (for every 2 degrees change on the IMU, the corresponding servo only moves 1 degree). this is definitely not studying for heat transfer… You’re right, it isn’t studying for heat transfer. It’s far more epic.

On Penn State: Victimhood can be so lonely
thepoliticalpartygirl: Watching these Penn State riots/protests/whatever, I can’t help but think of the students at Penn State who have been victims of monsters like Sandusky. To watch your classmates chant the name of a man who not only permitted but enabled the sexual abuse of young children, some as young as 8-years-old must be so awful. I remember in the wake of my sexual assault, both the...

After The New Sociopathy, The New Psychopathy
globalsociology: Courtesy of George Monbiot: “If wealth was the inevitable result of hard work and enterprise, every woman in Africa would be a millionaire. The claims that the ultra-rich 1% make for themselves – that they are possessed of unique intelligence or creativity or drive – are examples of the self-attribution fallacy. This means crediting yourself with outcomes for which you weren’t...
